What Happens at a Vow Renewal Ceremony?
Perhaps you’re celebrating a special anniversary. Perhaps your original wedding was small, rushed or not quite the celebration you’d hoped for.
Or perhaps you’ve simply built a wonderful life together and fancy saying:
“Yes, I’d still choose you.”
Whatever your reason, a vow renewal is a lovely way to celebrate your marriage, look back at everything you’ve shared and make new promises for the future.
And no, you don’t have to wait until your silver wedding anniversary!
What’s a vow renewal ceremony?
A vow renewal is a symbolic ceremony where a married couple reaffirms their love and commitment to each other.
You’re not legally marrying again, so there’s no legal paperwork or prescribed wording to worry about.
That means the ceremony can be as relaxed, romantic, emotional, funny or unconventional as you’d like it to be.
It could be an intimate ceremony with just the two of you, or a big celebration involving your family, friends, children and grandchildren.
There really are no rules.

Why do couples renew their vows?
There are all sorts of reasons.
You might want to:
- celebrate a special anniversary;
- include children or grandchildren who weren’t at your wedding;
- have the celebration you couldn’t have the first time;
- mark a new chapter in your lives;
- celebrate after marrying overseas;
- reaffirm your commitment after everything you’ve experienced together.
Or perhaps you just want an excuse for a wonderful party!
“Because we want to” is a perfectly good reason.
What happens during the ceremony?
That’s completely up to you.
Your ceremony could include:
- the story of your relationship and marriage;
- memories from your original wedding day;
- readings, poems or music;
- contributions from family and friends;
- renewed or newly written vows;
- a rededication of your wedding rings;
- the exchange of new rings or gifts;
- a symbolic ceremony;
- the signing of a commemorative vow renewal certificate.
You’ll receive a vow renewal certificate as a keepsake from the ceremony. You can sign it together and, if you’d like, invite family members or friends to sign as witnesses too.
It isn’t a legal document, but it’s a lovely reminder of the promises you’ve made and the people who shared the moment with you.
Your ceremony can be romantic without being overly formal, emotional without being uncomfortable and funny without losing its meaning.
Most importantly, it should sound and feel like you.
Do we have to write new vows?
No.
You could repeat your original wedding vows, update them or write completely new ones.
Your first vows may have been about the life you hoped to build together. Your new vows can celebrate the life you’ve actually created.
You might talk about what you appreciate most about each other now, the adventures and challenges you’ve shared, or what you’re promising for the next stage of your lives.
And don’t worry if writing vows fills you with dread—I can help you find the right words!
Can we involve our children or grandchildren?
Of course, and this can be one of the loveliest parts of a vow renewal.
They could:
- give a reading;
- share a favourite memory;
- present your rings;
- choose some music;
- join in a tying-the-knot, sand or unity candle ceremony;
- sign your commemorative certificate as witnesses.
Your family may look very different from when you first married, so a vow renewal is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate everyone who’s become part of your story.
Can we include something symbolic?
Yes.
You could include a tying-the-knot ceremony, candle ceremony, sand ceremony, ring blessing or hand blessing.
Or we can create something completely personal that reflects your relationship, family, interests or shared memories.
Meaningful doesn’t have to mean solemn. A symbolic element can be romantic, fun, emotional—or a mixture of all three.
Where can we renew our vows?
Almost anywhere, with the venue or landowner’s permission.
You might choose:
- your own garden;
- your original wedding venue;
- a hotel or country house;
- a beach or woodland;
- a favourite restaurant;
- somewhere connected to your first date;
- a destination that means something special to you.
It doesn’t need to be grand. The meaning behind the location matters far more than its size.
What should we wear?
Whatever makes you feel fabulous.
You could wear your original wedding outfits, choose something completely new or keep it relaxed and informal.
There’s no vow renewal etiquette police!
The same applies to flowers, attendants, entrances, cake and speeches. Keep the traditions you love and ignore the ones you don’t.
Your marriage deserves celebrating
A vow renewal isn’t about pretending to get married again.
It’s about celebrating everything that’s happened since you first said “I do”—and the fact that, after all those years, changes, challenges and adventures, you’re still choosing each other.
Your ceremony can be intimate or extravagant, emotional or hilarious, traditional or completely unexpected.
Most importantly, it should be yours.
