You’ve got the perfect person in mind — your best friend, your sister or brother, one of your parents, or even the person who introduced you. They know you and your story, so having them standing at the front could make your ceremony even more personal.

But can a friend conduct your wedding ceremony?

Yes — but not your legal marriage. There’s an important difference between someone leading your ceremony and someone carrying out the legal marriage.

What’s the difference?

At the moment, you can’t simply nominate a friend or family member to make your marriage legally valid in England or Wales.

For a civil marriage, a registrar must carry out or be present at the legal ceremony. Religious marriages have their own legal requirements. You can read more about the legal aspects of celebrant ceremonies on my website.

Many couples complete the legal formalities separately and then have a personal wedding ceremony where they can choose their own words, vows, readings, music and traditions — with someone they love leading it.

Why choose a friend or family member?

For some couples, there’s one person who just feels right.

They may have known you both for years, watched your relationship grow or shared some of your biggest moments. Having that person lead your friend-led wedding ceremony can make it incredibly special.

You’ll also have freedom over the style and content. Your ceremony can be romantic, funny, emotional, traditional, unconventional — or a mixture of all of them.

But there’s something couples can overlook: someone still has to write it.

Who writes the wedding ceremony?

Being the perfect person to deliver a ceremony doesn’t necessarily mean knowing how to create one.

How long should it be? Where do the vows go? How do you introduce readings? How do you turn your ideas into a wedding ceremony script that sounds natural and flows beautifully?

You may have the perfect person to stand at the front, but they probably don’t have experience of turning your ideas into a complete ceremony that’s personal, well structured and easy to deliver.

That’s exactly where I can help.

My Signature Ceremony Writing service

I created my Signature Ceremony Writing service for couples who already know who they want to lead their ceremony but would still like it professionally written.

I get to know you and your story before creating something completely bespoke. It isn’t a standard wedding ceremony script with a few names changed.

The £600 service includes a fully personalised ceremony script, personalised vows for both partners, a delivery-ready version for your chosen person, a 60-minute planning call, where possible an in-person meeting, guidance and coaching for the person leading the ceremony, unlimited edits, and final PDF and Word copies.

The delivery version includes guidance, cues, pauses and movements, so your chosen person understands the flow rather than simply being handed pages of words and wished good luck.

If you’d rather have an experienced celebrant create and deliver your ceremony, my full celebrant packages are designed for that instead. They’re two different choices for two different couples.

My Signature Ceremony Writing service was also recently featured in An Essex Wedding magazine, where I shared the story behind the service and how it worked for one of my couples.

What can you include in a friend-led wedding ceremony?

Pretty much anything that feels right for you.

You might include your story, personal vows, rings, readings, music, contributions from family and friends, symbolic elements, cultural or spiritual traditions, humour or remembrance.

The skill is bringing those ingredients together so they feel like one ceremony rather than separate pieces. Because I’ve spent more than 35 years speaking in front of audiences, I write with delivery in mind too.

What if our friend has never conducted a ceremony before?

That’s often the case, and it doesn’t mean they can’t do a wonderful job.

They need a ceremony they understand and feel comfortable delivering. Practical guidance on pauses, movements and key moments can make a big difference, leaving them to concentrate on the part only they can bring — their own connection with you.

Deborah and Kevin were disappointed when I was unavailable on their wedding date, as we’d clicked so well during our discovery call.

Rather than leave it there, I suggested they ask a close friend to lead their ceremony and use my Signature Ceremony Writing service to create the ceremony itself.

After completing my couple’s questionnaire, we worked together until their ceremony felt completely personal. A few weeks before the wedding, I was also able to meet them and their friend at the venue to walk through the ceremony and finalise the practical details.

His marked-up script guided him throughout, including when to pause and move aside for photographs.

Afterwards, Deborah and Kevin told me:

“It was as if Amanda was delivering the ceremony on the day — it was beautiful.”

Is a friend-led wedding ceremony right for us?

It could be a lovely option if there’s somebody you genuinely want to lead your ceremony, particularly if you’re completing the legal marriage separately, planning a destination wedding or have someone who needs professional support with the writing and structure.

For destination weddings, check the legal marriage requirements in the country concerned, as these vary.

I wouldn’t choose a friend simply because it seems easier or cheaper. Choose them because having that particular person lead your wedding ceremony means something to you.

Someone you love at the front, with professional support behind them

A friend-led wedding ceremony can be funny, emotional, relaxed, moving and completely unique.

Your friend or family member brings their own history with you — the memories, experiences and connection that come from already being part of your lives.

What I bring is professional experience behind the scenes — creating a professionally written wedding ceremony, shaping all those personal ingredients into something that flows beautifully, and giving your chosen person a script they can deliver with confidence.

If you start with my Signature Ceremony Writing service but later decide you’d prefer me to conduct your ceremony too, you can upgrade to my Micro or Bronze ceremony package, subject to availability.

My Signature Ceremony Writing service costs £600 and is available for couples planning weddings in the UK and abroad.
